Built for those navigating the inner city and doing their best to hold on to their deen. Gang, block, hood — none of it defines you. You are an akh first.
Urban Akhs represents Muslims from the inner city. “Urban” speaks to the communities we come from, while “Akh” means brother in Arabic.
Being Muslim in the inner city comes with a unique set of challenges. Gun violence, addiction and the pressure to build a name or reputation can shape the environments we have to navigate. In the middle of it all, it can become easy to lose sight of the deen.
That’s what this movement is about—embracing where we come from while being proud of who we are as Muslims. No matter where we are in our journey, we can always return to the deen, stand together as brothers and keep moving forward.
Through every struggle, we are still holding on to the rope.
No matter where we come from, what we’ve experienced or how the world identifies us, we are Muslims first.
Allah has given us the perfect roadmap for this life. Our responsibility is to follow it to the best of our ability—and to keep turning back whenever we fall short.
“The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers. And be mindful of Allah so you may be shown mercy.”— Qur’an 49:10
As Muslims, we have to see one another as brothers. We may come from different backgrounds and all have our own shortcomings, but at the end of the day, we are one Ummah.
Over here, we push brotherhood over division and unity over everything meant to separate us.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “By Him in whose hand is my soul, if you did not sin, Allah would replace you with people who would sin, seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would forgive them.”— Sahih Muslim 2749
Not one of us is perfect. We will make mistakes, but we should always strive to become better, day by day, insha’Allah.
This isn’t an excuse to take sin lightly. It’s a reminder never to let guilt or shame stop you from returning to Allah. No matter what you’re caught up in or how many times you fall short, repent, get back up and keep moving forward.
Every piece is a statement of where you stand. Wear the reminder. Carry the message. Still holding onto the rope.
Urban Akhs is a movement of brothers holding each other accountable. We share reminders, link up, and remind one another that we're never doing this alone. Tag us, rep the ummah, and become part of the family.
